Urgent Infrastructure Upgrades Needed to Support Malta’s Key Trailer Services Sector

10 September 2024

"Trailer services offered by Maltese companies are a vital link between Malta and mainland Europe and optimizing all the spaces available for these operations will greatly improve efficiencies and turnover,” explained Joseph Bugeja.

“Minister Bonett has already shown a proactive approach in addressing these infrastructure needs and we are delighted that during the meeting he has reiterated further support for this sector,” added Mr Bugeja.

During the meeting, ATTO presented the Hon. Minister with the "EU MANIFEST: Manifesto from the Island Nation Member States on EU Road Transport Policy, Including Combined Transport."

Urgent Infrastructure Upgrades Needed to Support Malta’s Key Trailer Services Sector

The manifesto, which outlines the road haulage industry’s priorities for the upcoming EU mandate (2024-2029), was a collaborative effort between ATTO, the Irish Road Haulage Association (IRHA), the Malta Chamber of Commerce, Enterprise and Industry, and the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce & Industry and reflects the collective stance of Malta, Cyprus, and Ireland on critical transport policies affecting the island states.

ATTO also underscored the need for a comprehensive sectoral study.

“Despite the trailer services sector's 48-year history and its significant contribution to Malta's GDP, employment, and trade, a professional study has yet to be carried out. The proposed study would aim to evaluate the economic importance of the sector, with a focus on Malta’s connectivity with Europe
and beyond,” he added.

Discussions are ongoing to consolidate a potential business relationship between ATTO and Transport Malta. Both parties have agreed to explore an agreement that would allow ATTO to maintain its international affiliations with the road transport sector.

“This business cooperation would be crucial for ensuring that ATTO’s voice is heard in international forums and that Malta's interests in the road haulage sector are well represented,” concluded Joseph Bugeja.
