Malta to identify more sectors to excel in competitiveness - PN

30 October 2025

Nationalist Party Leader Alex Borg meets with ATTO - 30th October 2025

The PN wants Malta to identify more sectors to excel in competitiveness

The Nationalist Party wants Malta to identify more sectors in which the country can excel in competitiveness at the European level. This goal is being pursued through regular meetings with various organizations, such as the Association for Transport and Trailer Operators (ATTO). In this case, consultation can also be strengthened regarding European Directives that will
come into effect in the coming months and that will impact this sector.  This was the message of Nationalist Party Leader Alex Borg when he led a PN delegation in a meeting with ATTO, where discussions included the emissions system within the European Union and the association’s concern about how these measures could negatively affect Island Nations like Malta.

This is particularly due to logistics and maritime transport costs, where appeals were repeated for the Maltese Government to work for exemptions that could ease this challenge. During the meeting, reference was also made to several European Directives that affect Malta logistically because it is an island. Here, Alex Borg reiterated the commitment that a future  Nationalist Government would address these issues for the benefit of all Maltese and Gozitans. It was also mentioned that while work to and from Malta has increased, the infrastructure has remained the same. At this point, reference to the Deep Water Quay infrastructural work and its deadline was made.

For his part, Alex Borg said that the Nationalist Party will do everything possible to ensure that this sector continues to be safeguarded, including by maintaining the good relationship that already exists between both sides.

The ATTO delegation was led by Chairperson Joseph Bugeja, while the Nationalist Party Leader was accompanied by Shadow Minister for Transport, Agriculture and Fisheries Toni Bezzina and Shadow Minister for Employment, the Maritime Sector and Aviation Ivan Castillo.
