ATTO was pleased to participate in a high-level discussion at the European Parliament in Brussels on 18 March 2026, ahead of key deliberations on the revision of the Combined Transport Directive.
Hosted by MEP Dr Daniel Attard and the Board of Directors of UIRR, the meeting focused on a critical issue: the current definition of combined transport does not adequately reflect the realities of island Member States, nor does it fully support the modernisation of intermodal freight transport within the EU Single Market.
MEP Dr Daniel Attard, the host of this business breakfast at the EU Parliament stressed the importance of updating this directive which originated 34 years ago. Our Chairman, Mr Joseph Bugeja, had the honour of opening the discussion, highlighting the challenges faced by the industry. Contributions from MEP Dr Peter Agius reinforced the importance of maintaining momentum to ensure this directive evolves in line with today’s needs.
During our visit, we also held constructive separate meetings with MEP, Dr Alex Agius Saliba, and with MEP Dr Peter Agius strengthening dialogue on the future of road transport policy.
A particular highlight was meeting the President of the EU Parliament Dr Roberta Metsola, where key challenges and priorities for our sector were discussed.
We also valued our exchanges we had at IRU – The International Road Union - with whom ATTO is a member, namely with Dr Raluca Marian, Director EU Advocacy and Mr Mark Billiet Associate Director reaffirming the importance of collaboration at EU level.
These discussions are essential to ensure that future legislation reflects the realities of all Member States and supports a more efficient, modern, and competitive transport sector.
We would like to extend our sincere appreciation to Mr Dan Wolff of Eurotran for his valuable support and for facilitating this important visit, contributing significantly to its success.
